Tips to help our Newborn Session go smoothly:
WHEN: Schedule your Newborn Photo Session as early as possible!
- Shooting newborns in the first 10 days of life is ideal. Plan ahead - contact me before (around the second trimester) birth to set up an approximate date for newborn photos.
Photographing the babies as early as possible allows us to capture those brand new little features!
Also, newborns love to sleep so we can pose the baby and get some super fun posed shots!
After two weeks babies go through a growth spurt and will start stretching their arms and legs and will not be as amenable to curling up for a picture or sleeping as soundly, which is needed for some of the poses and photographs in props like the buckets.
Full Baby Bellys are Best! Go ahead and feed your baby or top baby off as soon as you arrive!
A well-fed baby with a full belly is essential! Moms - don't feel pressured to rush a feed.
If you breastfeed and can, have at least one bottle pumped for feeding.
It's important that a baby gets the hind milk and that can mean nursing quite a while on each side.
After the baby is full, make sure they are burped very well. Gas can take a sleepy, happy baby to an uncomfortable and irritable one in seconds.
- Warm Baby! I'll occasionally use a safe space heater or crank up the heat in the studio area to make sure the baby is nice and warm and toasty! We'll keep your sleeping baby warm and wrapped up until we're ready to begin shooting.
- Noise, Sound and Soothing
I'll use a Noise Machine and/or heater for soothing sounds to relax the baby.
If the baby has older siblings along for the session, it's a good idea to remind the older children that the baby needs some special individual attention for a few moments. We'll try to keep older kids occupied, not to disturb the baby. Older kids are welcome to join in for group photos if you so desire!
If mom and dad want in on the photos - be sure to let me know prior to the session so that we can discuss wardrobe options and session props/set-up.
Props, Clothing and Accessories
Don't worry about buying or bringing tons of clothing, hats or accessories ....I have lots of newborn props and accessories, but feel free to bring your own that might be special to you.
Show some baby skin - or not!
It's ok to have bare-bottom shots of the baby or the little one can simply wear a diaper! We can easily cover up privates or regular diapers with blankets, wraps or props.
- Loosen the baby's diaper 30 minutes prior to the session. This allows time for the diaper's imprint marks to disappear.
- Accidents! No problem! Everything can wash!
- Be patient
If the baby gets fussy or alert, don't stress out... A baby can sense your anxiety. We'll try to get the baby comfortable again, and we'll take any necessary breaks!
- A majority of photos will work best if the baby is asleep, so anything you can in advance to encourage this is recommended.
Peace of Mind
If there is a point during our session when you're uncomfortable with the poses, simply let me know. Safety first and I only want to do poses and shots you're comfortable with.
